Summer is finally here and you’ve waiting all winter long to be able to get outside and enjoy the warm sunshine. With the extreme heat and the humidity, there are some days when it’s just too hot to get outside. There are ways to stay cool though, whether you are just out enjoying the sunshine, playing games with family or sticking to that exercise routine you’ve been working so hard on.
The Time Of Day Can Make All The Difference
If you want to avoid the extreme daytime heat, you will want to avoid exercising between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. as that is the hottest part of the day. Mornings are usually the best time because it’s not that hot and sometimes there is a slight breeze that will give you some extra cool down time.
Cool and Loose Clothing
In order to stay cool while in the sun and heat you will want to wear loose clothing that can breathe and colors that will help reflect the sun. Black, for instance, will absorb the sun which will create more heat on your body. “Wicking” fabrics are perfect for working out because they are synthetic fibers designed especially for wicking during exercise. Drink, Drink, Drink
Staying hydrated is always important, but it’s extremely important when you are exercising. You should drink at least a glass of water before you head out and also carry a bottle of water or some type of hydration with you. Take a drink every 15-20 minutes, even if you’re not that thirsty so you can keep hydrated. Don’t forget to take a few extra glasses of water once you’re done with your workout.
Any time you’re outside during the summer you want to be sure you are protecting your skin. Apply sunscreen often and make sure it has an SPF of 15 or higher so that it will help prevent sunburn.
If you exercise in areas like the park, walk the trails or other tree-lined areas you will more than likely avoid most of the sun exposure and the heat. It’s also cooler in the shade of course and can keep you a little cooler. Pay Attention To Your Body
You’re body knows when something is wrong and there are often different signs it gives to tell you. Be sure to know the signs and symptoms of heat related illnesses and stop your workout or take extra breaks to help ensure you stay safe.
