This year’s theme is “back to basics.” We’re going to recommend tried and true back to school looks that work for any age. Mixing the latest trends with basic staples is the best way to get the most mileage out of your wardrobe…they won’t be out of style by January. In a nutshell, we’re going for minimalist backpacks, classic kicks, and, basic tees, and private school prep. Here are a few looks you’ll love:
The Pleated Skirt
Take any uniform staple like a plaid or pleated skirt and do it up. This looks work for pretty much any occasion. For example, have to make an appearance at your cousin’s wedding shower? Pair with a blouse and pointed flats. School picture day? Rock it with a v-neck tee, chunky necklace, and denim jacket with your Adidas classics. Literally, any look. Other private school staples include button down shirts, solid jumpers, and bow ties. You can use ALL OF THESE pieces on a daily basis. Get this Topshop Skirt at NordStrom for only $60.
Gone are backpacks with huge prints on them. If your child has grown out of Shopkins and Marvel, get a classically sophisticated backpack that mom or dad wouldn’t mind borrowing. We love the tried and true Jansport, but if your teen is more “brand conscious,” check out a Herschel Supply Co backpack. We are somewhat obsessed with the minimalist, but somehow still rugged, look. There are some basic designs for those who want to stand out “just enough.” Check out matching lunchboxes and pencil cases, too. Find Hershchel at Urban Outfitters Canada, J. Crew, and of course, Herschel.com.
The Basic Tee
We love v-neck tees that go under army jackets, cardigans, flannels, and well, pretty much everything. We love to dress up a vintage tee with fun jewelry, or a fancy watch. We also love them for layering under those itchy fall sweaters. That work when tucked into dainty skirts by giving your look an edge. The half tuck works great on everything from khakis to a wide leg cargo pant. Never go wrong with a white t-shirt. Not possible. Our faves come from American Apparel because you can choose any cut and fit you like.
No look is complete with a good pair of kicks. This past year has been a huge year for Adidas. The Jenner sisters have put them back into the closets of teenagers. Not that they ever go out of style. One of the reasons we love the look is that they work with EVERYTHING. Wide leg cropped pants, skinnies, skirts (pencil and pleated), floral sun dresses. I mean, this going be the investment piece for the year. Get these for your son AND daughter and call it a day. Find ’em at Foot Locker, and no they won’t go on sale.
