When you think of a beach vacation destination, what do you think of? Myrtle Beach, maybe Daytona Beach? It’s true, Pennsylvania isn’t bordered by an ocean but there are still some nice beach vacation spots in PA. We may not have the ocean but we have Lake Erie and lots of lakes with manmade beaches sprinkled around Pennsylvania. Here are just a few.
Hotel Breakers at Cedar Point is one of those places that once you’re there, You don’t have to leave the resort if you don’t want to. It offers swimming pools that include a children’s area, private lake beach access, you can literally walk to Cedar Point, several restaurants on-site, an arcade, and much more. Lake view rooms available.
Shawnee State Park in Schellsburg, PA is a 451 acre warm water reservoir. There are lots of area for fishing, picnicking, hiking trails, camping, and of course a manmade beach area. The beach area has sand volleyball courts, restrooms/changing area, designated swimming area, and playground. The swimming area is well marked and the water doesn’t get deeper than about 4.5 feet. Near the beach area is also a boat rental to rent anything from kayaks, to paddle boats, to small fishing boats.
Mt Gretna Lake and Beach just 4.5 miles off the Lebanon/Lancaster exit on the PA turnpike boasts a 8 acres of beach, recreation, and picnic grove. With lifeguards on duty the whole family can enjoy their time. With amenities such as a water swing, diving board, high dive platform, children’s dock, children’s play area, changing area, snack bar and more. There is a fee for daily entry. There’s no camping or lodging on site but there are several camp areas within 10 miles of the beach area.
Visit Presque Isle in Erie, PA and you’ll have your choice of beaches. Presque Isle beaches have lifeguards on duty. Depending on which of the 9 beaches you choose many have bath houses, sand volleyball courts, concession stands, and more. You can visit the Presque Isle lighthouse, enjoy kayaking and boating, hike the many trails available, or enjoy fishing. You can rent everything from cabins, to cottages, to yurts to stay at Presque Isle. Presque Isle is a peninsula and is titled Pennsylvania’s only “seashore”. It’s was also named one of the best places in the US for bird watching.
These are just a few highlights. If you’re headed to a specific area of PA, just search for beaches in the area. You’re sure to find one within a reasonable distance. The best part, many are more affordable than those commercial ocean beaches.
