Get festive with the food. Memorial Day is the perfect time to show off your culinary skills. You can even get the kids into the kitchen and have them help out by making some delicious desserts. Bed Bath and Beyond is the place to purchase all of your platters and serving ware. If a trifle is a bit too complicated for your liking, go with simple star cookies. Use a star shaped cookie cutter to make sugar cookies. Ice them with white icing, and then drizzle red and blue icing on top. You can also use sprinkles to add even more decoration. These are sure to be a hit with the kids.
Get crafty and make some art. Make a decorative wreath that you can use for Memorial Day, Flag Day, the 4th of July, Sept. 11th, and Veteran’s Day. Start with a plain grapevine wreath. You can use whatever size you prefer. Have your kids paint their hands in the colors of the American flag- blue palms, red and white fingers. Place the painted palms down on white paper, and allow to dry. Cut out the hands, and then adhere them to the grapevine wreath, with the fingers pointed outward. Make as many painted hand cut-outs as necessary to fill the wreath. Use red, white and blue ribbon to make a bow trio. Tie the bow to the top of the wreath, and hang the wreath on a wreath hanger.
