A lot of times, cleaning agents you find on store shelves have harmful chemicals in them. You may hide them under the sink, but that doesn’t change the fact that you’re applying them to your counters, tubs, and floors.
This year as you do your Spring Cleaning, try some more basic options. They’re powerful, green chic, and just happen to be way cheaper, too.
Instead of busting out something in a thick, plastic spray bottle, consider another powerful cleaning agent as you scrub everything down this year. When you combine baking soda with vinegar, you get a powerful reaction that will help you scrub dirt and grime away easily. Apply baking soda first, and then spray or gently pour vinegar over it. This alternative solution can be used on floors, counters, bathtubs and even toilet bowls.
Heat up some vinegar in the microwave. Transfer it into a heat-resistant spray bottle, and then spray on your windows, glass top coffee table, shower door and any other glass surfaces. Allow it to sit for a few minutes, and then scrub away for a squeaky clean.
Maybe your coffee table is made of wood. Odds are, your entertainment stand and the legs of your couch are, too. To polish these up to the point where they sparkle without releasing noxious fumes into your home, make a mixture of half lemon juice and half olive oil. Dip a washcloth or rag into the solution, wring it out, and apply a light layer to wood surfaces with sweeping strokes of the cloth. This alternative can also be used to help minimize the appearance of any small scratches on hardwood floors. Just be sure to rub in and clean up any excess; this will make your floor slippery!
Have a pet that likes to hang out on the couch? You love them, but likely aren’t so in love with that stank. To eliminate the smell, spread baking soda on the smelly upholstery. Allow it to sit for about 20 minutes. Then bust out your vacuum and suck the stinky white baking soda up. If there’s still a slight offense to your olfactory senses, repeat.
This solution also works great for those nighttime accidents that happen when you have little ones. Just sprinkle the baking soda over the affected area of the mattress, give it time to absorb some of the liquid along with the smell, and vacuum so you can save the mattress and eliminate the unpleasant odor.
Want to get your house smelling super clean before someone comes over to visit? Or just for your day to day life? Get a cotton ball and put a few drops of your favorite essential oils on it. Then stick it inside the chamber of your vacuum where you’d normally find the dirt it picks up. Run your vacuum as normal. When you’re done, the room will smell fresh as daisies. Or lavendar. Or cinnamon. Or whatever essential oil you chose to use.
If super simple cleaning methods freak you out, you can always buy green cleaning products. They generally have less of those harmful chemicals, if any at all. One of our favorites is Mrs. Meyers. They currently have 50% off many items, with a 40% off coupon code for multi-surface cleaner.
