How to Balance Life, Work, and Play

Do you ever get to a point where you feel so overwhelmed, you don’t know what to do? We get so busy that our “to-do list” just gets longer and longer. We start brushing things off saying that we’ll do them later. Only our hours turn into days, days into weeks, weeks into months, and before we even realize what we’ve done, we’ve procrastinated to the point of utter disregard. We get so caught up in our everyday routine that we put off what we know needs done with an inconsiderate amount of time. It’s not intentional, of course, but it happens. Sure, it’s easy to say that life just got in the way — which can absolutely be the truth, sometimes — but do you ever wonder if there’s a deeper reason behind all those excuses?

What stops us from making time for what we really need to be doing? What about the stuff we want to be doing? We allow ourselves to get too busy, then we use that as an excuse to not get things done.

So, how can we really balance life, work, and play? Is it even possible? Here are my tips to finding balance. I hope they help you!

  • Prioritize – Get your priorities straight. Obviously, if you have a job, that becomes a priority. But don’t let your family and yourself get neglected because of that job. Do what you need to do, delegate when you can, and don’t sweat the small stuff. Don’t spend so much time working that you forget there are others who need you too. Yes, I understand some jobs are demanding. We are currently facing this in our family. But when the job becomes too much, maybe it’s time to take a step back and evaluate your priorities. Do your best for your job, but don’t kill yourself in the process.

  • Take up a Hobby – I read an article online the other day that said most people in the work force need to have a 2:1 Work/Life Balance. So, for every 2 hours of work, you get 1 hour of play/free time. For every 4 hours of work, you get 2 hours of free time. For every 8 hours of work, you get 4 hours of play, and so on. Find something you’re interested in and do it during those free hours. Love photography? Get yourself a good camera, some fun equipment, and start shooting! Check out Rocky Mountain ATV and get out and enjoy the great outdoors.

  • Make a List – Don’t just make a list. Make a list and stick to it! Get up 5 minutes early and write down everything you need to accomplish that day. Don’t write what you hope to accomplish, start with what must be done. Be sure to add family time and free time to your list. As you accomplish things through the day, mark them off your list. The more you complete, the better you will feel, and you’ll soon be able to start balancing life, work, and play without a set list. It will just become habit.

Is it always easy to balance life, work, and play? No. Sometimes life really does get in the way. But, if you settle down and focus on what needs done, prioritize those areas, and allow yourself a little fun time, you and your family will all be better off.
