How to Exercise in the Winter Months

Baby, it’s cold outside! At least it is where I am! We have been blessed with a very mild winter up until this point. In fact, it was over 60*F on Christmas Day! But, we are back to reality — and very cold temperatures once again. So, now it’s time to figure out how to exercise in the winter.

If it’s too cold for you to get outside, here are some easy ways to exercise indoors:

  • Invest in a Treadmill – Don’t just invest in the treadmill, though. USE IT! Don’t let it become somewhere to hang your clothes. Let it be something you use every day, even if it’s only for a few minutes each day! When I first started my weight loss, I started with 30 minutes on the treadmill every day. Eventually, I worked my way up to longer and faster, but just a few minutes each day made a huge improvement. My treadmill was definitely my favorite way to exercise in the winter. • Join a Local Gym – If you have this option, and you can afford it, go for it! Gyms aren’t what they used to be, and there’s no judgement! Everyone has to start somewhere, but you have to start to get somewhere. Check out your local gym, and see if you can get a friend to join with you. It’s always more fun to workout if you’ve got an exercise buddy.
  • Workout with Exercise Videos – Exercise videos are a fun, easy way to burn calories at home and exercise in the winter. My kids love it when I pop in an exercise video, and we all try to do the exercises together. You can find videos that are made to work with any fitness level, and you can quickly and easily advance to the next level.
  • Consider a Wii Fit Board for Exercise – This is another favorite option of mine. I know the Wii isn’t used much any more, but I absolutely loved stepping on the board every day and watching the pounds melt off. Wii makes working out fun with games and Mii characters.

See? There are lots of ways to exercise in the winter. It may be cold outside, but don’t let that stop you from becoming a healthier, happier you!
