How to Throw the Perfect Memorial Day Bash

Planning to host a Memorial Day get together for family and friends? The food is probably one of your main concerns after you put together the guest list. Memorial Day is a great excuse to fire up the grill and cook some of your favorite summertime dishes to share. No one wants to indulge in super heavy foods this time of the year when the weather is hot and humid. Keeping the dishes light and simple will allow your guests to enjoy a larger sampling of foods, and then they won’t be too full or uncomfortable to enjoy spending time outdoors.

An open floor plan or open kitchen is best for entertaining a large number of guests, say eight or more people. Plan to serve your food indoors, and then guests can decide where they would like to eat. This is the best way to make sure that food doesn’t spoil out in the hot sun. Keep cold foods cold, on ice, if possible. There are many foods that can be safely served at room temperature, but anything with a mayonnaise base needs to be kept cool. Use melamine plates for a festive touch. Pier 1 Imports has a fabulous selection of dinnerware to choose from, with fresh summer designs. Save 20% off all regularly priced transactions through Memorial Day. Using this type of dinnerware is a great idea if you have clumsy friends or relatives, or are inviting children over.

Offer outdoor seating for your guests. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy. You can even build a small platform area for outdoor seating with simple building materials to have a designated seating area that’s off of the ground. This will help to protect furniture. You could even build a canopy overhead to keep the area dry, and furniture protected from the sun. If you need to upgrade your outdoor furniture, check out the stylish furniture pieces and accessories from The Home Depot, where you can receive 30% off select patio furniture.

Serve a meat and cheese plate as an appetizer. Rather than going with heavy starters, simply put together a tray or platter with fresh deli meats, like salami and ham or roast beef, with little toasts. Serve a variety of cheeses, like aged cheddar, swiss, and fresh motzarella balls. Add beautiful fresh veggies, like cherry tomatoes, fresh cucumbers, and sliced celery. For a different take on cheese and crackers, cover a block of cream cheese with chopped green onions and bacon bits. Serve with various crackers for a cool and creamy snack.

Kebabs are the perfect choice for your main entree. They are healthy, fresh, beautiful to look at, and best of all, they are portable. Plan to do a few different options for kebabs. You might do one with chicken, peppers, red onion, and zucchini slices. You can also do a similar kebab with beed, instead of chicken. Grill up some skewars of fresh tomatoes and onions that guests can take and share. You could also grill up some fresh pineapple to serve alongside the ham on your cheese table.

Keep dessert very light. You could serve something simple which has fresh berries as the star. Angel food cake, strawberry shortcake or fruit tarts are all light and fresh desserts for summertime.
