New Year, New You: Getting Healthy in the New Year

With the New Year comes the desire to get it right. Getting healthy in the New Year is on everyone’s mind. But, how do you do it? Is it really hard to get healthy and make better choices when it comes to food, exercise, and what you drink?

I will tell you that in 2015, I lost 70 pounds. I was at my lowest weight and feeling great! It took a lot of hard work and determination, but I did it. I was so happy and so proud. And then I got lazy. My gym closed down, and instead of looking for other ways to exercise, I just stopped exercising. Slowly, I started introducing soda and sweet tea back into my diet. Throughout 2016, I ended up gaining back 30 of the pounds I’d lost the year before. So, this year, I’ll be getting healthy in the new year right along with you!

Here are my tips from when I lost the weight before. They’re not hard to do, you just have to stick with them. I know I’ll be doing a much better job this year than I did last year!

  • Use a Child-sized plate – For me, it’s all about portion control. When I sit down to dinner with my family, it’s so easy to grab a big plate, load it up, and just eat until it’s gone. But, by opting for a child-sized plate instead of an adult’s plate, it still allows me to eat exactly what I made for my family, I just don’t eat so much of it. Maybe you don’t want to use a child’s plate, because you’re afraid of it looking silly? Opt for a salad sized plate instead of a dinner plate.   • Say No to Soda – That’s right. No more soda. Or sweet tea. Limit your alcohol. Coffee is fine, as long as you don’t load it up with sugar or sweetened creamers. When I lost all the weight before, I cut out everything except water. For the first few weeks, I did need to add in a few squirts of water enhancers, but after those initial few weeks, I was able to drink water without needing any flavor put in it at all. Now that the new year has started, I’m back to absolutely nothing to drink but water, and I already feel a million times better! Getting healthy in the new year doesn’t have to taste bad, but sometimes those drinks that taste really really good aren’t helping you!

  • Exercise, exercise, exercise! – When I first started losing the weight, I didn’t have a gym to go to. So, I walked. I walked a lot. I walked so much, I wore my treadmill out! So, then I walked my neighborhood. It was such a nice way to get out of the house and enjoy the air. On super cold or rainy days, I’d stay inside and walk on the Wii fit board.
