Memorial Day is nearly upon us and you’ll be seeing a lot of patriotic threads at the store. It’s hard to pull off this look without looking too kitschy. Once you overdo it, you’ll look like a human parade banner. The rules are not so different for women and men, but ladies; you have a bit more latitude on this one. You should have navy and white in your closets this summer because they go with everything. Navy is a neutral and works with yellow, coral, bright pinks and oranges, teal, and so much more. For the patriotic holidays, work it with white and a splash of red.
Here are some tips for enjoying the patriotic season this summer:
Bold stripes are a good thing paired with solids and other patterns, if you dare. The broad stripes modernize the whole look. We love this dress for it’s simplicity and the fact that it can be toned down with a nude shoe, or sassed up with a red shoe or a bold red statement necklace. You’ll find plenty of this patterns on skirts that you can dress up or down (think a chambray shirt, or blouse with tiny white stars on it).
Red jeans or red khakis are a bold choice, but will work for you in the fall. Red on the bottom is surprisingly wearable! We would go with solids and avoid patterns–red jeans are pretty bold. The model does it with neutrals like a white top and denim jacket, but we’d love to see this with a navy cardigan or cross body bag. Dress it up with pumps and a navy statement necklace. These will take you right into Fall. Check out Yoox for some really affordable options.
Neutral accessories pare it down. It will keep you form looking like an American flag and will work to make the whole outfit less distracting; especially if you’re going with a patterned look. We’d love to see this bag with a pretty gold watch and cute pair of neutral wedges. Check Shopbop for some higher end options!
It’s in the details. Invest in a festive pair of socks or belt. If you can pull it off, a bow tie is cute, but avoid actual flag patterns. Blue and white stripes or polka dots will keep you looking modern.
Keep it tailored and occasion appropriate. These men pull off this look because they keep it neat and crisp. We especially love the tailored jackets and pocket square for a day wedding. Note that green is a complimentary color and if paired with navy, will avoid looking Christmas-y!
Blue jeans count. We kind of love every jean from Old Navy, particular the Rock Star Skinny. Using jeans as your base is simple and effective. A red accessory or cute American Flag tank underneath is festive without being over the top.
