If your child is a bit absent minded, or even has ADD or ADHD, organizing school work and keeping on task can be a major hurdle to success in school. Usually, punishment won’t help–it will just create more anxiety around school. If you have a child who tends to be forgetful about school work, or who has difficulty organizing, here are some tried and true tips.
- When possible, have two sets of Tale of Two Cities, or whatever book he is reading in English class. See if the teacher can provide two sets of books or other supplies so that your child has less to remember. If remembering work is a problem, another option is to allow him or her to take notes on his tablet and access the notes on the cloud or Google Drive. He can’t lose those!
- Do a nightly notebook check. Make sure your child has a designated place to write down his homework and check that place every night. If he has forgotten to write something down, or didn’t get to it in time, make arrangements to problem solve. Email the teacher, or call a friend.
- Organize the school supplies. Color coding is a great option. Red folder and red notebook for English, blue for math, etc. Another option is a folder with built in pockets rather than separate folders. If possible, all can get hole-punched and put into a three ring binder. Do not get an access of school supplies.
- Create at at-home workspace. It might consist of a white board calendar that he can fill in daily or weekly, checklists, stress balls, and post-it notes to remember items that pop into his head. The workspace should include places for everything that are preferably labeled. Most importantly, this is not a place where phones or other distractors are welcome!
- Clean house on a weekly basis. Have him go through his folders and throw out graded work, or fileaway items he might need later, like essays.
